The global distribution of electron density and volume intensity of
427.8 nm luminescence in the E-region is calculated. Variations in the
density distribution are examined as a function of the AE index.
Calculations of the integrated luminosity are compared with data on the
location of the equatorial diffuse-penetration boundary (DPB).
