The characteristics of the distribution of Martian craters in four age groups as a whole over the surface, and in areas with differing albedos and hypsometric levels, have been studied. A statistical analysis of 12,700 craters indicated that 7 percent of the craters are in the oldest group, 15 percent are in the old group, 18 percent are in the young group, and 60 percent are in the youngest group. The average density of craters of all ages is higher in dark areas (173 craters per million sq km) than in bright regions (65 craters per million sq km). The crater density is highest at levels between 3 and 4 km (130 craters per million sq km), and lowest at levels between - 2 and 0 km (40 craters per million sq km).
