Analytical data on Na, K, Mg, Li, Rb, Tl and Cs are presented for 28 granitic rocks from the Damaraland igneous province of South-West Africa. The specimens studied represent plutonio bodies of moderate size and some related dykes, as well as orogenic granites of batholithic dimensions. In age, the granites fall into three well-defined groups: early preCambrian, Cambrian and Mesozoic. Bulk compositions of the rocks approximate closely to the ternary eutectic of synthetic "granite systems" and provide evidence of their crystallization from melts. Systematic variations in the concentrations and ratios of the alkali metals--in particular K, Rb and Tl--between the three generations of granite are analogous to those characteristic of fractionated igneous suites. The observed geochemical relationships may partly reflect differences in the emplacement levels of the granites. However, successive episodes of partial melting of older granites and sediments, during which the palingenetic melts were enriched in the more mobile constituents, are considered the dominant control over their differentiation.
