The average density of craters in the 4- to 10-km diameter range was determined for 23 geologic-geomorphic units of Mars. The determinations, based on Mariner-9 images and the 1:25,000,000 geologic map of Scott and Carr (1977), relied on digitized, same-scale versions of the imagery and the geologic map. Crater densities have been suggested as indicators of the age of the Martian geologic formations. On the basis of this suggestion, a ranking from youngest to oldest formation was devised: Tharsis volcanic material, smooth plains, rolling plains, plains, ridged plains, hilly and cratered material, and cratered plateaus.
