SWIRE is the largest of the Spitzer Legacy programs, surveying ˜ 50 square degrees of high latitude extragalactic sky in all seven Spitzer imaging bands. It therefore probes larger volumes of high redshift space for luminous infrared galaxies than the smaller, deeper, Spitzer surveys, and it maps larger size-scales. We have searched the SWIRE databases for samples of rare, distant and dusty luminous infrared galaxies, which may trace the formation of massive galaxies in the most massive dark matter halos. Spitzer offers the potential to greatly expand the known samples of distant ULIRGs, which so far have been painstakingly assembled in relatively small numbers using submillimeter imaging. The new Spitzer samples will be used to investigate the detailed properties of this important population, including their star formation rates, their clustering properties and their connection to AGN.
