Review of the controversy between two groups of astronomers concerning the distances to quasars. A detailed account is given of the arguments put forth by advocates of cosmological distances and local distances to quasars, noting the ways in which the two groups account for the role of quasars in the expansion of the universe and the types of assumptions made by advocates of local distances with regard to departures from Hubble's law in the motion of the quasars.
