In order to effectively map the luminous and dark matter located within the Local Universe, we have been assembling a database of digital HI and optical spectra and photometry.
The database includes complete samples of galaxies suitable for application of the correlation between linewidths and luminosities of galaxies. The HI data has been accumulated from Nancay, Parkes, GBT and Arecibo radio telescopes. Optical photometry is accumulated with the Univeristy of Hawaii 2.2m Telescope.
A new method is used to measure an effective HI linewidth, leading to very stable and repeatable results. Previously obtained spectra have all been re-evaluated and new measurements derived for 4,000 galaxies. The goal of the project is to measure the distance of all spiral galaxies with inclination < 45 deg on the sky with magnitude M_K< -21, and separately, an all-sky sample of spiral galaxies selected with IRAS at 60 microns, leading to a combined catalog of 2,000 nearby galaxies with accurate distances.
Distances acquired from other techniques (TRGB, SBF, Cepheid, SNIa, Fundamental Plane) are added to the database with a confirmed common zero point. Within 3000 km/s, distance estimates are available for over half the non-dwarf galaxies.
This large set of galaxies is used to compute the large scale motions in the local Universe and to derive the distribution of mass. Some preliminary results will be shown. There is consistency between the observed motions and the simulations of the skeleton of the Local universe.
