An accurate method for the calculation of the thermodynamics of diatomic molecules is presented. This method is applied to derive particle densities and internal energies for molecules of astronomical relevance, as H2 and CO. Also, to facilitate the calculation of these quantities in complex radiative hydrodynamical problems an approximation to the internal partition function is given, based on a simplified analytical solution, whose accuracy exceeds current polynomial approximations significantly.
