It is proposed that the observed relation between the luminosities and velocity dispersions of elliptical galaxies is the result of dissipative processes that are important during their formation. This hypothesis is illustrated with schematic models of galaxy formation via mergers of protogalactic subsystems. With reasonable amounts of gaseous energy dissipation and star formation resulting from mergers the models reproduce the observed correlations between luminosity, metallicity, and velocity dispersion in elliptical galaxies. Possible correlations with flattening are also discussed.
