It is proposed that a dead (i.e., nonaccreting) disk serving as a reservoir of material will form around a magnetized spinning neutron star or white dwarf if the radius of the stellar magnetosphere exceeds the corotation radius. The structure of a dead disk is analyzed, an expression for a disk's blackbody radiation spectrum is obtained, and results are presented for a numerical calculation of disk structure. A qualitative description of how a gaseous disk will form and evolve in a binary system is given, and it is shown that a dead disk can retard the spin of a compact star. It is suggested that disk reservoirs might account for the occurrence of transient X-ray sources, flares in dwarf novae, and the turn-off of X-rays from Her X-1.
