This paper is a commentary on Robert Lupton's description of common practices in astronomy for characterizing astronomical images. One of the key limitations facing astronomers described in his paper is an (at best) partial knowledge of the point spread function (PSF) of the imaging system, where the PSF encapsulates information about detector sensitivities, telescope optics, atmospheric effects, and other factors contributing to the distortion of the observed image. This commentary focuses several statistical approaches which could be used to more accurately estimate a PSF from limited data.
