The various approaches to the half-life of 87Rb by absolute 4π counting are critically examined in order to provide a reliable, physically determined value for geochronology. At first, the discrepancies between the proportional counter determinations are discussed with respect to the most recent measurement, which yielded (4.88-0.10+0.06) × 1010 yr. It is shown that two former investigations employing similar techniques contain uncertainties due to foil absorption and to the detection of after-pulses, respectively. Then comparison is made with the results from the scintillation counter methods. The measurements with liquid scintillators favour a value in the range 4.7-5.0 × 1010 yr, but an accurate and reliable value cannot be derived from them because of the poor counting efficiency at low energies. The outcomes from inorganic scintillation crystals are rejected. It is concluded that the Rb-Sr method can only be based on the above-mentioned proportional counter value of 4.88 × 1010 yr and on the result from a likewise direct determination using geochemical methods, viz. (4.72 +/- 0.04) × 1010 yr. With the present status of the K-Ar and U/Th-Pb decay constants, however, concordant geologic ages can only be obtained with the higher value.
