Observational data and theoretical considerations are reviewed in regard to binary X-ray sources and bursts of cosmic soft-gamma radiation. The distribution of X-ray sources in the galaxy is described, and the parameters of the HZ Her - Her X-1 system and Cyg X-1 are outlined. The properties of compact objects which constitute X-ray sources (white dwarfs, neutron stars, and black holes) are briefly reviewed, and the mechanism of pulsar X-ray emission is analyzed. The structure and spectrum of soft gamma radiation are described, and models are evaluated which associate gamma bursts with flaring stars and the spontaneous release of elastic deformation energy in the solid nuclei of old neutron stars.
