The first detection of deuterium Balmer lines is reported in five HII regions of the Galaxy and the Small Magellanic Cloud. The DI lines appear as faint, narrow emission features in the blue wings of the HI Balmer lines and can be distinguished from high-velocity HI emission. The identification with deuterium and the excitation mechanism by fluorescence are both established beyond doubt. The Balmer lines might be the only way to observe deuterium in objects like the Magellanic Clouds or low metallicity blue compact galaxies. The lines also allow stringent upper limits to be put on deuterium abundance in planetary nebulae.
