The discovery of regular (about 4.5 minutes) strong oscillations in the optical flux of the binary system AM Herculis is reported. Spectroscopic data obtained with high time resolution at the 6-m Soviet telescope in July 1989 when the source has declined to a magnitude of 14.2, reveal large amplitude (up to 60 percent) fluctuations which persist over most of the orbital cycle. A detailed temporal analysis shows the fluctuations to be nearly closely periodic with a period steadily increasing from 250 s to 280 s during the 3.5 hour observations. This is the first evidence that the (5-10 minutes) flickering often observed in AM Her systems may consist of the superposition of regular periodic oscillations. The spectral changes associated with the oscillations are small, similar amplitude being observed in both continuum and emission lines. Possible interpretations are discussed here in terms of mass accretion instability arising at the capture radius.
