Attention is given to the variability in a large population of radio sources close to the nucleus of the active galaxy M 82, whose observation over three years with the VLA offers the first look at a 'starburst', or rapid star formation near the nucleus of a small fraction of galaxies. One source which in February 1981 was 10 times brighter than the Milky Way's most luminous SNR turned off within only a few months, and most of the other 10 strongest sources are declining so rapidly that they will fade into the background within 30 years. An estimate of the energy input rate by the radio-visible supernovae closely matches the far-IR luminosities recently measured for M 82 and similar galaxies.
