The disk of M31, the closest spiral galaxy to our Milky Way, is about 180' x 60' in size in the optical. With an inclination of about 80 degrees, M31 is nearly edge-on, so that it is possible to distinguish diffuse emission originating in the halo from emission in the disk of M31. By combining a series of observations taken with the XMM-Newton telescope, we have discovered a halo of diffuse X-ray emission extending over 8 kpc (0.7 degrees) away from the disk. The surface brightness distribution of the hot gas is much flatter than the stellar distribution of the bulge and follows a shallow power-law with an index of about 0.8 (beta=0.3), a value similar to the most extended emission of hot gas around ellipticals. We will discuss the implications of the soft X-ray halo on the energy budget and other parameters of M31.
