The Chandra Multiwavelength Project (ChaMP) has discovered a jet-like structure associated with a newly recognized quasar at redshift z=1.866. The system was 9.4' off-axis during an observation of 3C 207. Although signficantly distorted by the mirror PSF, which is roughly 10"x6" at this angle, we show using both a raytrace and a nearby bright point source that the X-ray image must arise from some combination of point and extended sources, or else from a minimum of three distinct point sources. Three or more unrelated sources would have an extremely small probability of occuring so close together by chance. We show that interpretation as a jet emitting X-rays via inverse Compton scattering on the Cosmic Microwave Background is plausible. However, this would be a surprising and unique discovery since we have obtained upper limits of 200 micro Jy at 8.46 GHz, and since the jet emits at 60% of the flux of the quasar.
This work was supported in part by NASA contract NAS8-39073 to the Chandra X-ray Center.
