The serendipitous discovery of a high-redshift (z = 3.853) quasar, designated as Q0413 - 11, located 73 arcsec south from the central galaxy of the rich cluster of galaxies Abell 483 (z = 0.28). The spectrum was obtained with the Faint Object Spectrograph on the 4.2-m William Herschel Telescope using a long slit in first-order red mode. Classical quasar broad emission lines are visible as well as absorption troughs characteristic of BAL quasars. On deep CCD frames made with the ESO 3.6-m telescope, the quasar has a B magnitude of 22.0 and a R magnitude of 19.4.
