We report the discover of a new dwarf carbon (dC) star that has been serendipitously identified during a proper motion survey for cool white dwarfs based on photographic material used for the construction of the Guide Star Catalog II (GSC II; McLean et al. 2001). Its large proper motion, μ ~ 0.45 arcsec/yr and its faint apparent magnitude (V ~ 18) suggest a nearby object of low luminosity. In addition, a low resolution spectrum taken with the William Herschel Telescope clearly shows the strong C2 bands at 4382, 4737, 5165, 6536 and 6191 Angstroms and confirm the dwarf nature of such carbon star. We discuss the spectroscopic and kinematics properties of this object and derive the absolute magnitude limit of MV > 12 mag, which appears significantly fainter than the other dC stars for which accurate luminosities have been calibrated using trigonometric parallaxes (Harris et al. 1998). Finally, the spectrum shows an unexpected increase of emission below 4700 Angstroms. This could be an indication of the presence of a bluer secondary component.
