We report the results of a CCD search for short-period binaries in the field of the Collinder 261, a populous old open cluster. 45 variables have been discovered among ~=7500 stars brighter than I=19 mag, 28 of which are W UMa-type stars while, of the remaining 17, most are detached or semidetached systems with periods of the order of 1 d. We estimate that at least 50 per cent of the contact systems are cluster members. 10 variables with periods of between 0.429 and 2.11 d are located on the cluster colour-magnitude diagram (CMD) in the blue straggler (BS) region, which strongly supports the hypothesis that a significant fraction of BS formed as a result of mass transfer in the close binary systems. Three extremely red stars with V-I>4.5 [(V-I)_0>4.2] were identified in the cluster area. These stars are located on the extension of the red giants of Cr261 and are likely cluster members. Comparison of the cluster colour-magnitude diagram with data published for Be 39 suggests that both clusters are approximately coeval (age ~=6-8 Gyr) and yields an apparent distance modulus ~=13.0 and a reddening E(B-V)~=0.22.
