We report the discovery of 24 Cepheid variables in the face on spiral galaxy IC 342, from observations made with the WIYN telescope on Kitt Peak in the r and i passbands of the extended Thuan-Gunn photometric system. IC 342 lies along a direction very close to the plane of our Galaxy, and suffers significant foreground extinction. From the Cepheid period-luminosity relations, we derive the mean apparent distance moduli to be 28.99 +/- 0.06 and 28.34 +/- 0.12 in r and i respectively. This implies a de-reddened distance modulus of 26.76 +/- 0.48. The large uncertainty in this result reflects the uncertainty of the mean i magnitudes, which are based on only a few epochs. Further observations in the i band will therefore reduce the uncertainty in the distance determination.
