We report on the discoveries and observations of classical novae discovered by one of us (KH) in 2002-2004 near the center of M31 in the R band (rarely used passband for nova observations). Most of them turn out to be moderately fast novae with t2R ≈ 20 - 53 days and appear to be caused by explosions on relatively low-mass white dwarfs (MWD < 0.8 MSolar). We detected a peculiar behaviour near the R band maximum of three novae - a dip or flare near the absolute magnitude MR ≈ -6.5; it occurs at the moment of the red flash, detected in U - B and B - V in some novae by van den Bergh & Younger (1987).
