We are finding a large population of previously unknown Galactic HII regions using the Green Bank Telescope at X-band to measure their recombination line emission. Our sources were selected based on coincident MIPSGAL 24 µm and VGPS 21cm continuum mission. In this pilot study we observed 83 targets, and nearly all (98%) were found to be HII regions based on the presence of recombination line emission. Since recombination lines are optically thin at 3 cm wavelength (X-band) we can see HII regions across the entire Galactic disk. Of these 80 newly detected HII regions, 8 have negative recombination line velocities, which places them outside the solar circle. We have found the distance to over 90% of these sources using the HI emission/absorption method with VGPS 21cm HI data. When completed this study will provide a complete census of all nebulae ionized by B0 stars within the solar circle in our target zone, doubling the number of known HII regions in this region. This will give a more accurate census of HII regions and their properties, provide a fair sampling of nebulae at all stages of their evolution, and increase our knowledge of Galactic structure.
