The passage of radio waves through an interplanetary medium with density discontinuities is analyzed. Wave diffraction by a single discontinuity is examined, and the possibility of observing such discontinuities by radio-astronomical methods is considered. It is shown that radio-wave diffraction by density discontinuities will make a distinct contribution to the observed pattern of interplanetary scintillations.
