Positions, sizes, and disappearance times of 766 solar filaments from the time period 1974-1980 were examined for correlations with geomagnetic activity. H-alpha filtergrams of the filaments were examined in consecutive-day sequences to fix the disappearance times. Analysis revealed that the geomagnetic activity was more correlated with filament area than its length. Further examination of the effects of disappearing filaments on the geomagnetic field was performed using superposed epochs to find the average Ap indices preceding and following filament disappearance. Filaments with areas greater than 70 sq deg were correlated with an increase in the Ap index 3-6 days post disappearnce. A longer delay was seen with areas from 4-70 sq deg. Comparisons of the 70 sq deg correlations with a random sample of readings over the observation period confirmed the relationship.
