Possible explanations for the experimentally observed abrupt changes in the energy spectra of electrons and gamma quanta in the cores of extensive air showers are examined. The absence of the fragmentation component of secondary hadrons in the inelastic collisions of primary protons with air atomic nuclei at energies of 1.8 x 10 exp 4 and higher is related to the production of bosons with a mass of 400 GeV/c-squared.
