A direct drive for robot applications is described. The motor operates as a permanently excited synchronous machine, whereby the proportion of magnetic material can be minimized owing to the rotor construction. It develops a continual torque of 827 Nm for an outer diameter of 386 mm and can be directly incorporated into the articulated arm. A microcomputer assumes the position and rotation speed regulation as well as the control of the multiphase pulse converter, which supplies the stator with square-wave current pulses.
