The Prognoz-8 satellite measured the directional and temporal characteristics of protons with energies exceeding 12 keV in the low-latitude transition region in the upper atmosphere. The distribution of the proton fluxes in this region was found to have the character of unidirectional and bidirectional beams along or antiparallel to magnetic field lines; the main direction of the flux is from the magnetopause to the transition region. Bidirectionality, observed at low absolute values of B over a large part of the spacecraft trajectory in passing through the transition region, is a characteristic feature of the proton fluxes.
