The direction of propagation of auroral kilometric radiation (AKR) was determined from the spin-modulated noise from the dipole connected to the sounder receiver on the Isis 1 spacecraft. On the basis of three passes with fixed-frequency measurements of 0.48 MHz it was shown that in the generation region at 3500-km altitude, the wave vectors are at 60 and 90 deg angles with respect to the local magnetic field, so that they are predominantly downcoming. In addition, the plasma frequency was much less than the gyrofrequency in the generation region. When these Isis observations are combined with previous AKR data, which indicates that it propagates predominantly in the right-hand polarized X-mode, serious disagreement occurs with many theories. However, the direct cyclotron and three-wave interaction theories involving an ELF/VLF wave promise to reconcile all the observations.
