Glow discharge was applied to the aqueous solution containing ammonia and aliphatic carboxylic acids. Several amino acids were synthesized by the direct amination reaction. Simultaneously stepwise oxidation reactions of the substrates and the products were also took place. The time courses of the amination reactions and also the oxidation reactions were studied. These results indicate that the amination and oxidation reactions induced by the electric discharge are initiated by hydroxyl radicals which are produced by the electric discharge through the decomposition of water molecules.
