GIRL represents a German contribution to the utilization of Spacelab on the U.S. Space Shuttle. GIRL will consist of a telescope of the type Ritchey-Chretien and a number of additional instruments, including an IR camera, a photopolarimeter, a Michelson interferometer, and an Ebert-Fastie spectrometer. The present investigation is concerned with the design and the development of a mu-processor system which can coordinate all the activities of the photopolarimeter. In addition, the considered system is to be capable to evaluate the signals provided by the detectors. In connection with operations of control and data reduction, the processor must be able to replace a lock-in amplifier, a spectral analyzer, a dc voltmeter for the determination of the detector offset voltages, and current and voltage sources. Attention is given to the laboratory model of the experimental processor, aspects of band-pass synthesis for ac voltage measurements, and test results.
