A simplified hydrodynamic model for the diffusive acceleration of nonthermal particles by spherical blast waves is examined with a view to creating a consistent model for the supernova remnant origin of cosmic rays on the basis of time-dependent nonlinear calculation. The model proposed here consists of eleven nonlinear evolution equations and allows for possible variations in the cosmic ray closure parameters of the two fluid models, normally assumed independent of the dynamics. The range of the final cosmic ray energy production efficiency, which is essentially independent of the ambient density, is determined.
