An MHD model of IMF diffusion into the magnetospheric tail is examined where the magnetosphere is approximated as an axisymmetric cavity which, at large distances from the earth, becomes a circular cylinder. An asymptotic solution is obtained to the problem of the diffusion of the transverse component of the magnetic field from the flow into the cylindrical cavity. At a magnetic Reynolds number of 100,000, the coefficient of IMF diffusion into the magnetospheric tail agrees with the mean value of the coefficient measured at a distance of 200 earth radii from the earth.
