Using the simplest magnetic field configurations that can explain the observed magnetic fields on Ap stars (He and Hs), it is shown that diffusion leads to the kind of surface inhomogeneities observed on those stars. For example, it is shown where the rare earths and iron would be expected to migrate. It is assumed that turbulence is negligible. In addition, it is shown how the observed surface inhomogeneities imply vertical inhomogeneities. The results are compared with observations mainly for 53 Cam. It is shown that elements concentrated where magnetic field lines are horizontal should lead to an He of opposite sign to the He measured with the aid of lines of hydrogen or of elements concentrated where the magnetic field is vertical.
