A new method of defining and solving the diffusion approximation scheme in photohydrodynamics is proposed. The control parameter of the approximation is the usual photon mean free path, lambda. The method consists of inverting an operator that takes the scattering part of the radiative transfer equation into account. For Thomson scattering without thermal dispersion nor quantum degeneracy, the result is expressed in terms of Rosseland means. In the LTE case, the Thomas-Masaki form of the radiative stress-energy tensor is recovered.
