We propose a 50 ks EPIC observation of NGC3344, a nearby face-on spiral galaxy, in order to study the properties of diffuse X-ray emitting gas in its disc. With this observation, we will be able to identify, classify and extract the bright point source population in the galaxy to a threshold of 3 imes10(37) ergsec (0.3-6 keV). Through spectral and morphological analysis of the soft X-ray signal, we will study the extent and distribution of diffuse hot gas in the disc, and through comparison with FUV and K band data, we will relate this emission to the local star formation rate. In light of our previous studies, this observation will help to complete a unique data set to study the star formation in the local Universe.
