The diffuse reflection and transmission of light in a finite atmosphere and reflection in a semi-infinite plane-parallel atmosphere is considered for both conservative and nonconservative scattering. The scattering indicatrix is expanded in Legendre polynomials and averaged in azimuth, and has N+1 terms. General Sobolev theory is used to derive linear algebraic equations determining the auxiliary polynomials qi(mu) and si(mu). As shown by Sobolev, the solution of the problem at hand can be reduced to the derivation of these polynomials.
