This paper discusses the relation between the observed intensity ratios of the unidentified diffuse interstellar bands at 5780 A and 5797 A and the shape of the ultraviolet extinction curve determined along the same lines of sight. High-resolution, low-noise spectroscopic observations are presented for nine lightly reddened stars chosen to exhibit very different ultraviolet extinction characteristics. It is shown that the strengths of these diffuse bands depend strongly on the extinction law, but that the intrinsic profiles do not; however, a physical interpretation of the observed phenomena is still very uncertain.
