An experiment, combining ionospheric sounding from a meridional grid of geophysical stations with electron-precipitation observations from the Aureole-2 satellite, was designed to study the polar rim of the main subauroral ionospheric trough near the Arctic diffuse auroral zone. It was found that the ionization-discontinuity at the polar rim of the trough corresponds quantitatively and spatially with the ionization of the F region by soft electrons (0.2-2 keV) precipitating on the outer boundary of the plasma sheet during a substorm. The duration of additional ionization after an isolated substorm burst is 1-3 h, with a concurrent reduction in the level of ionization at the rim of the diffusion zone and inside it.
