A new spatial array instrument has provided diffraction-limited mid-infrared intensity profiles of the type M supergiant stars α Orionis and α Scorpii, both of which are known to exhibit excess 10 μm radiation due to the presence of circumstellar dust shells. In the case of α Ori, there is a marked asymmetry in the dust distribution, with peak intensity of dust emission a distance of 0arcsec.9 from the star.
