It is suggested that angular-momentum transport caused by the different buoyancies of counterrotating compressible eddies may be the main cause of the accelerated rotation of the equatorial zones of Jupiter and Saturn. Calculations are performed in the mixing-length approximation, and the results are found to agree with observational data. The electrical conductivity of dense lower-atmospheric layers of the giant planets is estimated, and the role of an intrinsic magnetized ionosphere in the dynamics of observed atmospheric phenomena is shown to be important. A correlation between rotational velocity and equatorial flow width is predicted and tentatively confirmed by analysis of observational data on Jupiter.
