Ground-based, balloon, and GEOS-2 satellite data are used here to study the evolution of a magnetospheric substorm starting at 2101 UT on June 23, 1979. It is found that the precipitation front, moving equatorward during the loading phase, was not plane but convex toward the equator. The ion phase space density near midnight at geosynchronous orbit increased during the loading phase. The increase stopped at or soon after substorm onset and was followed by a decrease during the recovery phase. Pi 2 pulsations were evident in ground magnetometers not only at substorm onset but also at the later intensifications. Variations in the IMF Bz component showed some correlation with substorm activity.
