The International Celestial Reference Frame is formed by the VLBI radio positions of 212 extragalactic sources. In this paper we review the methods in current use to obtain precise positions of the optical counterparts of the ICRF sources. Emphasis is given to the Rio de Janeiro group efforts. In particular, to the recent approach devised to take into account the systematic part of the often unknown proper motions of the secondary stars. These form the local frame for the extragalactic source optical astrometric reduction. Preliminary results are presented, from the observation of 52 southern sources, using a locally corrected version of the A2.0 catalog, The A2.0 corrections have been prepared for the catalog plates dates and for the observations dates. The optical minus radio results show a better net alignment towards the ICRF and a smaller spread of the residuals, when the observation date local correction is used. The improvement agrees with what could be expected as the systematic part of the proper motions of the A2.0 stars that form the local frames of the reduction.
