This research investigates how a difference information criterion combined with a function of observed seismotectonic activity can be used to analyse the influence of seismotectonic activity on the variation in a radon time-series observed at the KSM site, Izu Peninsula, Japan.
The difference information criterion is used to identify significant variance in the radon time-series. The seismotectonic activity is represented by an aggregated univariate function of seismic observations. A flexible definition of the function is proposed, enabling an analysis of various geometrical and energetic relations between the seismotectonic activity and the monitoring site. The results are compared with previous results obtained at the same site with a different approach, identifying 12 post-seismic signals and one pre-seismic signal to 23 earthquakes with Mw > 6.0 and within 1000 km hypocentral distance during the period considered. The combination of a difference signal criterion and the introduced aggregation function of seismic observations is more sensitive for identifying seismotectonic-related variance in the radon time-series than the use of confidence intervals as proposed in former works.
