The theoretical calculations of dielectronic recombination (DR) rate coefficients for Ar ions are reviewed for intrashell (Δn = 0) and intershell (Δn ≠ 0) excitation transitions. This data base, which was generated by different authors, is not complete and this fact, together with the uncertainty in the accuracy of the calculations, makes it difficult to obtain a reliable empirical rate formula. New empirical formulae for the total rate α have been obtained for the two transitions (Δn = 0 and Δn ≠ 0) separately in the case of Ar ions.
