When the radiation field of newly born stars hits the surface of a
nearby interstellar molecular cloud, the UV photons heat the gas locally
and change its properties. Such a place is called a photon-dominated
region (PDR). In this paper the physical and chemical properties of a
PDR and its connection to star formation are described.
