The generation of initial conditions for cosmological N-body simulations is treated, following the method of Efstathiou et al. (1985). The Zel'dovich algorithm is derived from the basic equations of a pressureless ideal fluid in expanding coordinates. A standard cosmological model of a homogeneous, isotropic universe with expansion factor a(t) is used. This algorithm enables the motions of particles in the gravitational field of the continuum they represent to be followed, if the density fluctuations are small. Point distributions in cubic periodic volumes are created, in which the power spectrum of the points is either, (1) a power law P(k)∝kn with -2 ≤ n ≤ +1, (2) a pancake spectrum P(k)∝k0 with large cutoff wavelength or (3) a cold dark matter spectrum. The particle number varies between 143 and 203.
