Searching for binary and multiple stars among pre-main-sequence objects and determining their orbits and masses are necessary for a breakthrough in our knowledge of the star formation process. First priority targets may be advantageously selected from the observing program of the ESA HIPPARCOS satellite. HIPPARCOS will provide high precision individual parallaxes to distances of 150 pc and significantly improved group parallaxes to 500 pc. Added on targets will be the few binaries detected by lunar occultations, in the separation range 10 to 570 milliarcseconds (mas). We are proposing to perform astrometric measurements of 5 T Tauri stars and 5 Ae/Be Herbig objects, by means of the HST Fine Guidance Sensor (FGS) in the TRANS mode. The FGS will unveil their possible duplicity in the range 0".1 down to 10 mas. From FGS measured orbits, period and eccentricity distributions will be derived, and via accurate parallaxes the sum of the masses can be directly determined. The HST FGS is unique for carrying out the proposed research insofar lunar occultations are not generally available and provide angular separation in the occultation direction only; speckle interferometry is severely limited in angular resolution for large magnitude differences between the binary components. These observations will also serve as critical test cases for the HIPPARCOS double stars reductions. This is a Long-Term proposal.
