Planetary atmospheric waves are studied on the basis of Kurbatkin's (1974) long-range hydrodynamic forecasting model with mean-climatic constraints. The characteristics of the model are examined as a function of the spatial-temporal characteristics of meteorological fields. In particular, the effectiveness of parameterizing 'subgrid'-scale motions is evaluated, and the influence of dynamic factors and heating and dissipation mechanisms on the behavior of the geopotential over various periods of time is discussed.
